MacOS Audition 26.0.0.56 hangs when I switch between audio apps

I regularly use several apps in parallel when I’m working with audio (Audition, Cubase, MATLAB, Amazing Slow Downer, etc.) and often, when I switch back to Audition, it has stopped responding, and requires that I do a Force Quit to work with it again.

A second bug related to this: when it happens, and I double-click the file I was working with (to restart Audition), I’m told that a previous session ended unexpectedly, and I’m offered the Later/Delete/Open choice about what to do with the recovered session.  Since I want to ignore the recovered session and start over (with the file I’m trying to open), I select Delete, but this results in an empty session; I have to quit and double-click the file again.

Try the usual remedies: clearing caches and prefs, etc. But also try unpluging USB devices to see if there’s a conflict.

You might get a clue to the issue if you force quit the app when it’s frozen and then look at the logs that Audition writes.  Those files are in ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Audition/26/ , or on Windows this is %APPDATA%/Adobe/Audition/26/ I think.

Do this before you relaunch, or the files will be overwritten.

On a Mac, you can look at log files in the Console app for clues as well.

I’ve tried that. Running Console as the freeze happens. And here are my findings:

Console logs show repeated Audition faults saying: “This method should not be called on the main thread as it may lead to UI unresponsiveness,” followed by a large flood of “Message send exceeds rate-limit threshold and will be dropped.” The hang happens both with my SSL18 audio interface connected and with it unplugged, using Studio Display audio instead, so it does not seem to be caused specifically by the SSL18.

The most suspicious part is that, around the focus-change / audio-session transition, Audition repeatedly asks CoreAudio to create invalid audio converters, with logs like: “Failed to create a new in process converter -> from 2 ch, 44100 Hz … to 0 ch, 0 Hz … with status -50.” CoreAudio also reports “HALS_PlugIn::HostInterface_PropertiesChanged: the object is not valid,” and macOS logs audio category changes for com.adobe.Audition. There is also a repeated Adobe-side error loading AmioApe.bundle because it is x86_64 while the app needs arm64. ChatGPT interpretation is that Audition is entering a bad CoreAudio/audio-session state when focus changes, then doing blocking work on the main UI thread, which causes the UI to hang.

@audiosampling Entirely up to you. I own Reaper and Acoustica, and others, but I find Audition suits my work best….others feel differently.

This is exactly what I am experiencing as well, and it makes Audition totally unusable for me. Even when I switch to a simple text editor, just to document the sound design I do in Audition, Adobe Audition freezes when I return to it. It is very frustrating. This means I never can have Audition out of focus (not even check my emails).

Sounds like you have it worse than I do.  I wish there was a way to get Adobe support for this.

It started like you and only got worse with time.
