Record sounds from desktop audio

One feature that I find to be lacking in Audition is to record audio produced by one's computer.  In the past, I used Audacity to do this, but I currently have issues with using Audacity.  I think that Audition needs a feature like this where I can record audio from my desktop.  For example, if I want to record a podcast that I'm playing on my computer it would be great for Audition to directly record it without having to use a mic.

There is another reason too - not all PC manufacturers allow the means to record 'what you hear' because some of them got frightened off years ago by copyright threats from the RIAA. We know that this was quite unreasonable, but strictly speaking, this isn't an Audition issue at all.

 

Personally I use SoundTap for this purpose, on the few occasions that I need to, because this laptop isn't too keen on making a direct recording this way either. What SoundTap and the other streaming recorders do is pretty much the same as Virtual Audio Cable does - only it saves you the considerable effort of setting it up yourself, which isn't quite as straightforward as it seems.

That's a good feature request, but there are ways to do that now with some outside help.

 

If you're on Mac, use an application like Soundflower or others. For Windows there's JACK Audio Connection Kit and Virtual Audio Cable.

 

If you have Camtasia, Screenflow, OBS, or any of many other types of screen recorders, you can record your screen--including audio--and then open the MP4 in Audition or export just the audio from the recording to a WAV, MP3, AIFF, or what-have-you, without dealing with a virtual input/output mixer like the above.

 

P.S. Although I agree this would be useful, I don't think we'll see it added to Audition... For many reasons, but mostly because Adobe doesn't position Audition as an elearning tool, which is the domain in which direct screen recording lies (R.I.P. Adobe Captivate).
