iPad is the new Cintiq?

The way it is- you either have to be one of the fortunate few that work at a place like Pixar or ILM and your company provides you an interactive pen display, or wealthy enough to have a few thousand dollars to spare for one of these amazing devices.

The way it could be- creatives on a budget, students, the majority of us who don't have a few grand lying around, could use there IPad or Galaxy Tab with Photoshop to do what Cintiq users do at a fraction of the cost.

I would be so excited about purchasing an app that would enable me to do this. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Maybe in the future there will be a tablet to do this, but as Chris says, the current crop, including the iPad, won't replace a Cintiq in in terms of accuracy and functionality.

Unfortunately I being a student and a creative on a budget, fall into the second category as mentioned above, and don't have an extra few grand laying around to invest into a Cintiq. The painting was for a school assignment, and apparenty my school doesn't have that kind of cash laying around, because they don't have Cintiqs either.

Yes I do think about how much my time is worth, and I could be using tools more "suitable for the task" in many areas. I could spend thousands on better lenses, cameras, lighting kits, monitors, computer, etc. I'm just not living in that world of affluence as of yet. I have to work with what I've got.

Until I get there, an app where I can plug my iPad into my laptop that's running Photoshop, and work on my iPads screen is all I'm asking for.

If that is too much too ask for.

I'll just keep working with what Ive got.

"I just recently spent loads of hours doing a painting in Photoshop and would have loved to have been able to do this."

How much is your time worth to you? If you spend a lot of time doing this sort of thing, buy a tool suitable for the task.

I wouldn't say that "apple doesn't like pens or styluses," they sell them at the apple store. Even if it were true that "apple doesnt like them," apple users do. I like my stylus and my nomad brush.

I was sorta being sarcastic with "iPad is the new Cintiq?" I don't expect ipads to have the accuracy of Wacoms device, but is there any reason pressure, tilt, or rotation sensing technology couldn't be developed for the pen itself?

I'd buy an app that let's me use my iPad as an external screen in conjunction with photoshop running on my desktop. Even if there was no pressure, tilt, or rotation sensing. I just recently spent loads of hours doing a painting in Photoshop and would have loved to have been able to do this.

iPads don't have that kind of accuracy for the pen location, nor do they have pressure, tilt, or rotation sensing for a pen. Oh, yeah, and Apple doesn't like pens or styluses.
