P: stop bypasing the Smart Object system setting when selecting Open Copy

When choosing Open Copy after making edits, Photoshop displays a standard background layer regardless of whether Open as a Smart Layer is enabled in the system settings or not. Unless the only purpose of the setting is to change the default display (instead of providing a link back to the RAW file as the default), ignoring this setting does not make sense. Currently, when a Smart Object is not desired, the ability to open it as a regular file or a copy can be achieved simply via a keyboard shortcut or by selecting a different option; however, the system setting should not be overwritten when it is enabled for copies. Simply put, it interferes with the user's creative abilities by limiting options to Open, Open Object, and Open Copy, rather than Open, Open Object, Open Copy, and Open Copy Object.

For real-world examples, this limitation can be an issue when using copies is desirable for creating multiple versions (e.g., color, black-and-white, neon), producing multiple copies for different purposes (e.g., CMYK print, RGB print, digital use), or simply experimenting with different looks and editing styles.

The current workaround is to open the file as a Smart Object, select the layer, and create a New Smart Object via Copy. Then, on the new layer, choose Duplicate and create a new file, which then stores both the new file and the .xmp file in the system's memory until it is saved. Additionally, a default .xmp file is now created for the RAW image that needs to be reviewed and adjusted for future edits. This workflow also requires either closing the original Smart Object file if it is no longer needed or returning to it to delete the New Smart Object via Copy layer before continuing the edit.

Not only is this workflow cumbersome, but it also creates additional issues with tracking files and is a colossal waste of time. Again, please consider allowing the Open Copy command to include Smart Objects if it is enabled in the system settings or via a keyboard shortcut.

Note: As of this posting, I am using Camera Raw 17.4.0.2272 on a macOS system, but I believe this function works similarly in the Windows ecosystem.
