P: Support additional flavors (non iOS) of HEIC, HIF, HEVC for Import

Adobe get with the program.  I tried importing *.HIF files today from my EOS R5 and Lightroom Classic doesn't even show them in the import window.  They can't be imported.  I can import iPhone *.HEIF files but not from the EOS R5.  Adobe's lack of support for import and export of *.HEIF files is pathetic

This posting has gotten so long, it is hard to know what has and has not been stated. So keeping that in mind, my apology in advanced for already covered material.

While not yet working in LrC, it appears to work in ACR, and as such in PS. Tested a HEIC file (via Fujifilm X-T5) and bingo, it opens, etc.  (that is in ACR/PS, not LrC)

So, probably more than a bit of hope to see an improvement in LrC in the future??

@Keith Reeder

As a Legend in this forum, you should already know that Adobe does not comment on future functionality.

In any case, I refer you to the Pinned Post on this thread which was last updated in December of 2022: (quoted below for your convenience)

"(Dec 2022): See the updated doc: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/using/hdr-output.html in section "Working with HDR Output" for updates on preliminary support in Camera Raw.  Related thread"

When new information is available, that pinned post will be updated.

Note:
If you follow the Helpx document referenced above (and in the Pinned Post) you will find:

"Working with HDR Output

When HDR Output is enabled, Camera Raw offers the following additional capabilities:

  • An HDR button in the Edit panel for enabling High Dynamic Range photo processing.
  • Open and save photos in the AVIF or JPEG XL format.
  • Open other HDR formats such as 10-bit HEIF (.HIF file extension) files from recent Canon and Sony cameras."

As this is currently a Beta feature in Camera Raw, I think you can connect the dots to other clients in the Adobe Photography products for your future answers...

Knee-deep in tumbleweed here, and the slience is deafening, Rikk - is completely ignoring difficult questions the official Adobe way now?

Things sure have changed from when I had to manage customers' expectations: back then (all of five years ago), we felt that as we'd happily taken their money, we probably owed them at least the basic respect of a useful reply to a perfectly reasonable question...

I actually read all of your post, Rikk - but you still aren't answering the "why?" that is both implicitly and explictly asked in this thread: why are you still not supporting the R5 after all this time?

Youi can't possibly believe that no support after 2 or more years and not a word of explanation is an acceptable state of affairs, or even remotely good customer service

@Keith Reeder

From the post you quoted:
"When updates are available for additional camera manufacturers they will be posted here."

I will add this sentence to the pinned post for clarity.
That information has not changed.

This thread is currently titled: "P: Support additional flavors (non iOS) of HEIC, HIF, HEVC for Import"

Android is a non-iOS flavor.

We deserve much better than that, Rikk.

The content of the post is absolutely nothing to do with Android, and everything to do with the Canon R5.

I don't think we're being unreasonable in expecting you to read and respond to the question, not just ignore it in favour of hiding behind a non-answer and pretending that the subject line is all there is.

More than 2 years later I cannot open HIF files from a Canon R5.

What the hell Adobe?     Ideally in Lightroom Classic (latest as of today) on Mac OSX on M1 Max MBP.

Apprently it's different enough that it has been an issue (obviously). So who the bad guy is here is not exactly clear.

Still Adobe - they could tell us that's the cause of the delay, instead of ignoring the whole issue...

quoteThat was the answer I gleaned from Canon's discussion site. Sorry it didn't work for you.

Oh, no problem, Brad - but it was safe to assume that we've already tried "easy" fixes like changing file externsions.

Please add support for Canon´s HIF files on Windows machines. Every new Canon has that format. Please don´t force us to use that darned Canon Photo Professional software.
