Dynamic Alignment

The brush alignment currently has 4 different types:

  • Camera
  • Tangent Warp
  • Tangent Planar
  • UV

The idea would be to add a fifth type (or something similar) named “Dynamic”, and it would automatically switch between Camera or UV depending on where the cursor is located. If in the 3D view, the alignment type will be Camera, and if in the 2D view, it will be UV.

I have a slightly different approach in mind, involving three modes of operation. The first two modes are Automatic/Dynamic and the default Brush Settings, with a third addition called Override mode. As the name suggests, Override mode allows users to apply consistent brush settings across all tools. It would be especially useful for those who want control and consistency without needing the variability that the automatic mode provides.

The three proposed modes would be:

    • Automatic: Adjusts alignment based on the region, ideal for tablet use but potentially less flexible for some tasks.
    • Brush Settings: Keeps alignment and size settings tied to individual brush presets, preserving the current workflow and allowing users to switch quickly between brushes.
    • Override: Applies a user-defined setting across all brushes, offering a simplified, less tedious, and more consistent approach—potentially with more customization options than the Automatic mode.

These modes could be toggled using a button at the top with clear visual indicators, or through a shortcut for ease of access. This idea is somewhat similar to how Blender handles modes for snapping and transform orientation.

While this idea initially focuses on alignment, I also considered using the same brush settings across tools like erase and smudge. Selectively overriding specific aspects, such as the alpha, could add further control. However, this might risk complicating the interface, which could be a consideration when aiming for a streamlined user experience.

I had a similar idea since I was running into this problem frequently having to change brushes to UV especially after restarting. I think at the very least a shortcut would be nice for switching between alignment methods and maybe even size space in conjunction, only problem with that approach is it isn't suitable for tablet use.

I had no idea this forum existed until now and I think it's great wish more people were aware as it seems quite low for views. I look forward to seeing something implemented for improving the experience of switching between alignment methods.
