multi axis mirroring

allow multi axis mirroring. I think it would be better in fact to just remove mirroring at all and have it as an effect, which gives better control and avoid having to repaint if your forgot to put the mirror on, or remove the mirrored side if you decide it is better but have to use some workaround as the mirror is destructive

for example texturing a sword, I may need to reflect details to the other side and back for the blade, which is impossible and I need to use a lengthy workaround such as using shared uv space and then baking or something else, which is not really ideal... would much appreciate an update like this..

    Hi @naituw,

    Thank you for the suggestion.

It's very interesting. What you're suggesting is basically a non-destructive Mirroring + Multi axis Mirroring.

In a future release, we're gonna add Mirroring for Fill Layer, which will behave in the same way as the Mirroring for Paths, therefore will be non-destructive (could be a part of the solution). Additionnaly, you could try the Mirror Effect. It is also non-destructive, but works in 2D space (that can be an advantage and a disadvantage).

For the Multi axis part, for now the only solutions are the Radial Symmetry (but it doesn't exactly fit to all situations) or to stack multiple Mirror Effects (but it still works in 2D space).

I'll bring the Multi-axis topic up again to the team, but I don't expect anything coming updates.

    Best regards,

Hi, how is it going with this feature request? It's 2026 and Substance Painter still doesn't support proper multi-axis planar symmetry.

Currently, there are no viable tools in the software to handle this fundamental workflow. The Mirror filter doesn't work correctly, Radial symmetry is not a solution for non-cylindrical elements with mirror(not radial), and overlapping UVs are completely out of the question when we need both sides of the asset to have unique detailing and wear.

Please do something about this. Either implement a native solution, or give us deeper API access so we can write the tools ourselves if your roadmap pushes this basic feature to 2036. Thanks.
