P: Catalogs should not include LUT to manage catalog size

Hello,

I've been using a RNI profile for a couple years now and these last couple months I've (re)edited a lot of my keepers using it. The problem is that the catalog size has easily doubled or tripled because of that. I guess it's the profile that's causing it: it has a custom color table inside and so when I save the external .XMP associated with a RAW file, it is around 240kb, compared to the 10kb or less of a Lr profile sidecar. That adds 1mb for each 4 images I edit, 1gb for each 4000 processed images.

I don't know how Lr works in the insides, but it looks like instead of linking the image file to a profile file, it embeds or write the profile for each image, every time, resulting in bigger and bigger catalog files.

Is there any workaround or do I just sit and watch my catalog grow? It currently is 7,5gb after deleting History.

Thanks!

So, if I replace the profile with the LUT with another lighter profile (any Adobe profile i.e.) and then re-apply the LUT profile to around 10K images, will I see any catalog size reduction?

Thank you!

When creating a new catalog, its size should no longer include any Lookup Tables from images where Profiles that used Lookup Tables were applied.  (Smaller new catalog size)

Are the LUTs stored inside DNGs? TIA.

That's great, but is there any way I can take advantage of that feature? Looks like optimizing the existing catalog does nothing to the size.

I'm using 11.0.1. What should I see?

This was implemented effective with 11.0

LUTs (LookupTables) are currently stored in the catalog construct.  That is where the additional size is coming from. In the future we plan to move this out from the LRCAT file.
