Often when creating a new catalog, this is overlooked and settings are not saved.

Note that LR 14.4 seriously broke Automatically Write Changes Into XMP when used in conjuniction with Denoise:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-automatically-write-changes-to-xmp-can-t-be-used-with-denoise-on-large-numbers-of-photos/idi-p/15393188

Not only will Develop grind to a halt switching photos, but your catalog's .lrcat file will increase in size by two orders of magnitude.

This was not fixed in LR 14.5, indicating that Adobe doesn't consider this a serious problem.

Not a fan of this idea.  For various reasons, not the least of which is that for many people imeediatly after saving the XMP data to disk, the  Metadata mismatch flag comes right back on putting that same image back in the queue to be automaticallywritten (repeat forever, many people don't or can't use the "Auto write XMP" feature and would be quite annoyed if it became a default.
