P: Does not remember original file number when exporting an AI Denoise Image

  • May 3, 2023

When exporting an image with the option "Custom name - original file number", LrC fails to do so if the image is denoised using the new AI functionality. Instead you get the "Custom name - Sequence" instead.

OS: Windows 10,
LrC build no: 202304101834-a085245c

Steps to reproduce: Denoise an image using the new AI-function (button above the denoise sliders), export using "Custom name - original file number".
Result: The images get sequence number in the file name instead of image number. (The "Enhanced" addition to the name seems to confuse the export function. Should be fairly easy to parse or link back to the original file.)
Expected result: The exported images should have the original file number.

Ok its a bit tricky because I'm posting from work and the computer having the issue is at home. But see below for a screenshot and XMP taken directly from the dng file. It DOES have the original RAW filename in the XMP (near the end), just not being picked up by Lightroom. I reset application preferences and no change.

@ExUSA: "you can't click and rename in the grid view ... there is no way to simply click and rename (like both Windows and Mac UI)"

In Library Grid or People view, you can rename a file with the same number of clicks as in Mac Finder. See these two screen recordings for a comparison:

@ExUSA, something is clearly different in your situation from the screen recording I posted above. Please upload a sample .cr3 and the enhanced .dng to Wetransfer, Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar free service and we can see what might be going wrong.

Hi! I tested this and nope. There is nothing in preserved filename.

Workflow-

copy files from memory card to drive using Finder

import in place

enhance a few selected files

Rename is terribly designed, you can't click and rename in the grid view or Develop mode, hitting F2 is useless as there is no way to simply click and rename (like both Windows and Mac UI) and Preserve Filename just puts the name WITH the "Enhanced" part intact.

The only way I have found to rename these files is manually, one by one, in Library mode. This is user-hostile and poor design.

Ok I will check it! Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place, kind of new here.

@ExUSA: "The new dng "Preserved Filename" is NOT the original CR3 filename."

It usually is the original .cr3 file name. See this screen recording for an example:

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/rip5bd0fea64e2etmdypy/rename-enhanced.2025-02-13.mp4?rlkey=kerqsut1duny3zai2l4gh3js8&dl=0

To troubleshoot this, it helps to show the Preserved Filename field in the Metadata > Default panel. Click Customize at the bottom of the panel to add the field.

If at any step in that video what you're seeing doesn't correspond to what's in the video, please attach a full-resolution screenshot (not a phone pic) of the entire LR window showing what you see.

My apologies, i dodn't realize. But this doesn't work? The new dng "Preserved Filename" is NOT the original CR3 filename.

@ExUSA: "I just want a DNG with the original RAW filename WITHOUT the "Enhanced" part. 12345.cr3 to 12345.dng."

That's a different issue from the bug discussed here. Please add your constructive opinion and upvote here:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-ideas/p-a-way-to-alter-the-naming-for-enhanced-filename-suffixes/idi-p/13744448

"I don't see a way to use Lightroom's renaming feature to accomplish this so right now, I do it manually for each file which is painful and a huge waste of time."

You could rename a batch of the files back to use the original file name using a renaming template with the Preserved Filename token:

I don't see a way to use Lightroom's renaming feature to accomplish this so right now, I do it manually for each file which is painful and a huge waste of time.

PLEASE PLEASE fix this.
