P: Enable Zoom with Crop Tool

This may have already been suggested, but it would be nice if the zoom feature in Lightroom 4 could be enabled while using the crop tool to make refined adjustments to the crop area. At present, there is only a clumsy work-around using the secondary display for refined crop adjustments.

@Conrad_C How are you getting the zoom tool to appear when dragging the corner?

By @Earth Oliver

By pressing the scrubby zoom shortcut (Command+Shift+drag) that I mentioned earlier.

Note that when the Crop tool rectangle is not active, you only have to Shift-drag, which is odd…

I do consider this an incomplete implementation of crop-when-magnified. For example, for many years, in Photoshop and Lightroom Classic, I’ve inspected and edited images at high magnifications by relying on the Page Up/Page Down keys and their modifiers that scroll the view, and the Home/End keys that go to the top left and bottom right corners respectively. These do not work when the Crop tool is active in Lightroom Classic, and it would be nice if they did.

That’s in addition to the issue already mentioned above where there is UI confusion about the Hand tool when it’s being used to pan the image within the crop rectangle instead of panning the view.

I’m very, very glad to finally be able to crop when magnified, and at least the scrubby zoom shortcut and spacebar override works, but there is a little further UI cleanup to be done for this feature.

Thanks Conrad, that does work now. It was how I was expecting it to work, but it didn't until I closed and restarted LRC.

Weird.

The crop at 100% view works fine the first time. However if you want to refine the crop later it's not possible to do as you can't scroll the 100% full frame view to get at the crop handles, you have to delete the crop and start again.

I see the problem. Regardless of the zoom level, dragging outside the crop rectangle rotates the crop rectangle, and dragging inside the crop rectangle pans the image behind the crop rectangle, as in Photoshop. This is not a problem when the image is at Fit magnification because as you drag, you can see how the image is shifting behind the crop rectangle. However, when zoomed in so far that you can’t see the crop rectangle, dragging in the image displays a Hand tool and it doesn’t seem to pan the view enough…but what’s really going on is that it’s doing exactly what it always does: In Crop mode, the Hand tool pans the image, not the window view.

Adobe should design that to make it clearer, but there is a workaround you can use for panning the zoomed-in view while the crop rectangle is active: Use the traditional shortcut of holding down the spacebar to temporarily get the Hand tool, drag to pan the view to any part of the image needed, then release the spacebar to return to the cropping controls. (Yes, it’s confusing because it’s the same Hand icon doing two very different things, and that’s the UI Adobe needs to clarify.)

Another workaround: When you zoom in, instead of using the Toggle Zoom View command or its Z keyboard shortcut, use the continuous zoom shortcut like I did in the demo below, so that you zoom directly to the handle you want from the start. On my Mac, this is the shortcut Command+Shift+drag, which is not new.

Just got LR Classic 15 here.
The crop at 100% view works fine the first time. However if you want to refine the crop later it's not possible to do as you can't scroll the 100% full frame view to get at the crop handles, you have to delete the crop and  start again.

Disappointingly poor implementation after waiting for this for so long.

Yay - can't wait! I had a big book project this  month where the proofs showed that dozens of images needed better cropping. Let's not stop here - please keep adding Professional features to LR classic! There is still a good list of items to address. Thanks!

Hello everyone,

The MAX release for Adobe Photography products includes an update addressing the requested feature.

If the update isn’t visible in your Creative Cloud app, refresh it using [Ctrl/Cmd] + [Alt/Opt] + [R].

Please note: It may take up to 24 hours for the update to appear.

Thank you for your continued patience

Finally! After more than 13 years, this absolutely basic feature request might be coming to Classic!

If I want pixel perfect cropping, I can't do it in Lightroom because it is only able to do crop when the photo fits the display. It is especially frustrating with very high resolution photos on a smaller laptop screen.

I would really like the option to zoom in when cropping, just like in Photoshop.

@Gabor Lenart

I've merged your request into the existing authortive thread for zoom while cropping.

@ben446

Adjust Crop can be used without ever opening the Crop Panel.

The only thing AdjustCrop doens't allow is to resize opposite edges at the same time like LrC allows.
But I am confident @johnrellis will implement it.
