Ref:  Request to add the function of "Cut and Paste" within the Library module...

Dear Adobe Support Team

In the last several months, I have labored with the challenge of 'pulling together' several LRC Catalogs that I have collected over the years...  Yes, with over 400,000, this is a challenge...

Many years ago, "Multiple Cataloges" was desirable due to the 'ineffectiveness' of the "OLD" Lightroom Cataloging system... But now, over the years, that has changed and most of the Adobe Ambassadors, and Adobe Educators say, this is "No Longer an Issue" and some have claimed to have catalogs of over 500K and/or even more images in just one catalog with no 'speed' issues...

ALSO, today in more modern times.... All educators "warn" against making any "file structure changes" outside the Adobe Catalog because this will "destroy the integrity" of the application cataloging database, when "Assessts" are moved, and the application catalog does NOT know where to find them...

To that end...  I believe that the Adobe Development Teams need to do much more and make it a priority to help implement more features into the Adobe Library Modules, which are more "like" and/or compatible with the "functionality" of the "Operation File Management Systems" so that user of the Adobe Software will NOT be tempted to go "Outside the Adobe Echo System" to do such functions...

I will describe just one case in point that would help... although there are many, many more examples.

Problem:  In Adobe Lightroom, a user can "Drag and drop" a "folder" to move it to a new location

......... BUT, a user can NOT "Cut and paste" a "folder" to move it to a new location...

Explanation...  In my above-described endeavors to upgrade and combine all of my catalogs... of course, the listing of files has become much, much longer on the left side.  When I choose to 'move something' and do the "Drag and Drop" it is a 'time-consuming task' that becomes tricky when trying to find the right area of the 'directory' in which to 'drop' the folder that I am moving...  Sometimes, you can 'drop' it in the wrong location, and/or you are NOT sure if you are at the right location where you want to drop the folder...

With the "Cut and Paste" feature, you will have "more control" and give the operator "more time" to be very selective as to the 'new location' where the folder is to be "dopped" .. and this "functionality" would be more "similar" to the function systems of the windows "file Explorer System" or similarly in Apple.

The "Bottom Line" to this "suggestion" or "Request" is:

....... If Adobe wants users to 'stay inside the Lightroom Eco System' to make changes to the files and the fild directory structure...... then, make the system work more similar to the Windows and/or Apple version..... so the user will NOT go 'outside' the ecosystem, and accidentally cause problems in the "Library"

In closing..... I know that Adobe Staff is NOT obligated and/or probably will NOT respond to this suggestion..... AND, that is "OK" --  But, should you wish to, I am available for your communications and any further follow-up feedback...

I agree that drag-and-drop in the Folders, Collections, and Keyword List panels can be very fussy and painful.  Here's a tip for making it somewhat easier:

In the Filter Folders box at the top of the Folders panel, type one or more filter words, and the panel will display just the folders that contain at least one of those words. So you can type the source folder name and the destination folder name, eliminating the need to scroll while you drag-and-drop. For example:

.... Tks for the UpVote...

I fully agree with all that you have said.  I just want to give all the users the 'incentive' to NOT go outside the Eco System.

Tks again my friend.

GoldingD......

No argument with what you have written...

However, you have said:  "As a newbie not knowing what you are doing not knowing the implications, then yes."

You are giving this 'world of ours' with all the photographers out there...  Too much credit and...

......... I am trying and/or want to help make our system 'bulletproof"

I still belive that the "functionality of Cut and Paste" would add "Worlds" of improvement on this system

I would even go one step further........ Lets make "Cut and Paste" work at the "file level" below the folders also...

I just want something better..

Cheers

George...

While it is correct that many educators, blogger's, adviser's, etc, state that. It is not entirely true. That is with a caveat.

If you do this as an accident, as a newbie not knowing what you are doing not knowing the implications, then yes. Avoid moving files and folders outside of LrC.

But, if you do know what you are doing, you do know the implications, and you know to follow up, then purposely moving fies and folders outside of LrC can work, can be efficient, can be the way to go. As long as you remember to make the followup corrections inside of LrC.

Some LrC blogger's do in fact recommend that for large file structure changes.

Naturally have good backups.
