P: Photo Merge file name syntax

Currently when you use Photo Merge utilities the merge action name is appended to the end of the file name.  Unfortunately this then renders the file name unusable if you wnat to export with the original file number.

For example if the filename is IMG_0435 and you perform a Photo merge HDR action, the resulting file name is IMG_0435-HDR.

If you use the 'original file number' function in custom file naming you would get 0435 for the orginal file name and "" for the HDR file name.

So either let the user decided how HDR and pano files are named during the operation or fix the orgianl file number function to work with HDR and Pano appended.

If you created the 2 rename presets and named them something like  "1st Hdr-Pano Rename" and "2nd Hdr-Pano Rename" then they would be next to each other and easy to find and only one more rename.  Its easier than waiting for Adobe to implement something like this, especially since this is the first time I have seen this request.

Bob, I did try your suggestion and it does work.  It is a bit convoluted.  This workaround would not be necessary if Adobe would implement one of my original fix suggestions.

Software exisits to automate mundane tasks.  Having a community to create work-arounds is not user friendly.

Being your original are DNG files than here is a workaround.

Your merged HDR/Pano will be named like this with the File Number of the most selected file

Create one rename preset like this.  The "a" is important.  Rename the file.

Create another preset like this and rename again.  The result will be what you want.

Here is the original filename.

Here is what the name is changed to by Lightroom after doing a Photo Merge /HDR action.

(note that there are no preference options to customise the output filename)

Here is what the filename looks like using the export filename templates.

(note because the HDR has been appended to the filename, the “original file number” function returns a blank.)

Here is what it should look like.

There are two possible solutions:

  1. Allow the user to customise the HDR and Pano output file names so that the original file number is retained at the end of the output filename.
  2. Or, modify the Original File Number algorithm to find the number even when HDR or Pano have been appended to the file name.

If the files you are merging are DNG files I don't know what the rename will be but if they are not than after merge if you rename the Pano file using the following it will be renamed to the filename of the most selected file with the DNG extension.

Please post a screen capture of your Rename Photo dialog. That way we can see exactly what preset you are using.
