P: Prompt to restore from a backup if a corrupt catalog is detected.

Considering how often Lightroom Catalogues become corrupted these days compared with years past, I really feel that Adobe needs to lift its game on how you restore a corrupted catalogue from your backup files. Currently it is a complete faff as you have to manually find your backup file, then copy it over the corrputed one wherever that is.

 

My suggestion:

1) "Your current catalogue has become corrupted, would you like to restore from the most recent backup?"

2) "Yes"

3) ...restores catalogue from backup

Is your catalogue located on an external disk? If so, move it to your fastest internal disk - problem solved.

Some Catalog corruptions are fixable. Also, sometimes a Catalog may not itself open, but one may still want to retrieve latest work, that was done subsequent to the most recent backup, from that. Plus, the latest backup might in the worst case also be corrupted - in which case one may want to go to a prior one instead. For various reasons I would be uncomfortable with any one-click option which destructively overwrote any version of the Catalog.

 

As I see it backup is intentional and one's reversion to that also needs to be intentional and supervised.

 

I  would definitely support, though, a built-in option to directly open a new copy from a backed-up Catalog: automatically extracting that from its compressed Zip archive, and saving into the same location as the latest Catalog used - ensuring a unique Catalog name (perhaps by including the backup date). That would be a worthwhile convenience IMO.

 

That said, it has been several years since I've had any Catalog problem. So, rather than things getting worse, my own experience has been of better stability. I'm on Windows 10, NVidia graphics..
