Some users are reluctant to rely on custom metadata, since its not stored in XMP.This FR/Idea is to store custom metadata in XMP, or at least let there be an option to do so, even if not on by default.

Alan,

BIG THANKS for confirming that Rob Cole's plug-in still works with LR 9.21.

Here is a link that may help you.  About 3-4 messages down is a link to a Javascript routine that (I think) links VRA Core data elements with Bridge.  I don't have the technical chops to verify that all this would work.  I suspect that the organizations involved have professional IT people, and I'm just Joe User (with some Windows skills).  https://core.vraweb.org/vracore_tools.html

Hi Phil

Yes, Rob Cole's Custom Metadata still works a charm with LR Classic 9.2.1. Lightroom is the poster child for long-term compatibility with earlier versions.

As an example of how I use it, I am photographing plants that eventually end up in a museum, and I use the metadata to keep track of the collection number, so I can find the specimen later in the museum if I have to.

The downside, of course, with Custom Metadata is that it doesn't live in the photo, but only in the database, so when you, e.g., edit a raw file in Photoshop, or export an image in Lightroom, the data isn't automatically replicated in the new item.

Do you have a link to how VRA Core is maintained using Bridge? I can't imagine having the time to implement this for just my own private purposes. But then, I wouldn't have imagined that I was going to have a year at home in front of my computer!

Alan,

Just wondering if you are still using Rob Cole's Custom Metadata with LR 9.x.  Does it still work properly?

I just participated in a zoom meeting about photo archives for my hobby area.  These professional archivists use VRA Core, inputting all the VRA fields into Excel and then doing a merge into Bridge.  Too complex for my individual use, and in any case I want to focus my energy on Lightroom.

Question: When one takes a picture (digital camera) and the metadata of the XMP Dates - (except the creation date) are they carried over from the camera metadata on the time the image was taken? I tested a number of images and this appears to be the case, except for the XMP creation date (that changes once one changes the picture taken date). And will the metadataDate & modifydataDate will they change when picture is edited? Thanks

And, for those searching for it, the latest (AFAIK) version of Custom Metadata is available here. I use this version in Lightroom Classic CC 7.0.1. (And it is one of the reasons I would find it very difficult to migrate away from Lightroom, or even use Adobe Bridge).

And thanks, John, for the link regarding Rob Cole. I only communicated with him a few times, but I had always entertained the possibility of meeting him for coffee and seeing who was behind that ball of energy of Lightroom plugins.

Unfortunately, Rob Cole passed away a couple of years ago. But some people have started making his plugins available, including CustomMetadata.  See this thread for details: https://forums.adobe.com/message/9662000#9662000

The CustomMetaData link is dead.  Does anyone have another link for this plug-in?

Does anyone have this plug-in?  What is the copyright?

@11037553 - CustomMetadata will save custom metadata in a folder adjacent to catalog in xml format, so it can be backed up and restored if catalog disaster strikes.
