P: Side-by-side sharpness comparison for photo culling

Culling thousands of images is very time consuming in wildlife photography.  I am requesting three tools to easier determine sharpness. 1) this one is obvious, show the focus point in Adobe Lightroom. Often I want to prioritize a small section of the image such as a bird’s eye or face, if the focus point is not there, it is easy to reject.  2) Lightroom could easily train an AI model to check edge complexity within a specified area and tell me which is the sharpest between two or more images. Ideally, I could specify a different area for each image, but I could just crop them if need be. 3) I could follow up with an adjustable edge detection tool for two images, side by side, so I can see which has the strongest edges. As an aside, I have vitrious separation causing annoying floaters, making it very difficult for me to compere details in two images, but I can assure you that every wildlife photographer would love this. It would also be applicable to almost any genre of photography if I can define the area of interest.  I could, for instance define a vertical section of landscape images and easily determine which aperture I took has the best tradeoff between the desired depth of field and sharpness w.r.t the lens sweet spot.

    Hi @davidl35781049,

Thanks for taking the time to describe this workflow in detail. I can see how being able to concentrate on a specific area, such as a bird’s eye, and compare sharpness across a burst could make a significant difference when culling large wildlife shoots.

There is already an existing feature request for displaying camera autofocus points, so that part of your suggestion overlaps with feedback we’re already tracking from photographers.

The other parts of your request are different, though: specifically, being able to define an area of interest and compare its sharpness across multiple images, along with an edge/sharpness visualization for side-by-side comparison. I don’t want those ideas to get lost by treating the whole request as a duplicate of the autofocus-point request.

I’ve therefore moved this to the Ideas section so other photographers can vote and add their own use cases.

Thanks as well for explaining why the usual visual comparison is particularly difficult for you. That context is useful in understanding why a more objective visual comparison could improve your workflow.

    Best,

    Hi Anshul,

I’ll second the request for display of focus points. That would be super helpful but I think not too hard to do.
