[Mod's note: Changing title and moved to Ideas board]

To recreate this issue:

  1. Create a new catalog
  2. Import multiple images
  3. Mark several images as picks
  4. Mark several but not all of the picks as 1 or higher stars
  5. Activate filtering on "Picks"
  6. Change the filter type to "less-than or equal to"

My expected behavior from this would be some visual indication that the star filter is active, and for there be a way to have the star filter mode set to "less than or equal to" without it being active. The actual behavior is that the star filter remains active even if none of the stars nor the mode indicator are white. If following the steps above, only the images that are "picks" but have no star rating at all are displayed.

This  is objectively confusing and creates situations where it is unclear what filters are active at any given time. At best it is inconsistent UI design, as the implied convention is that when a filter element is displayed as white, that indicates it is active, and when it is displayed as grey, that indicates it is inactive. The star filter behavior described above runs counter to this convention. If this is not a UI convention, then the design is poor and it should be corrected.

Edit: I realize that there is a difference between the star filter mode being inactive and active in that it changes from very dark grey, to dark grey. However the other filter elements change from dark grey to white, as do the flags themselves. These indicators are inconsistent and confusing. When "less than or equal to" is active with no flags picked, I don't think it could be argued that it appears to be active given the existing conventions. The filter mode selector should be white if it is actively filtering.

The star rating filter is always active except in two instances:

1) Filters are off

2) >= with no stars being selected for comparison.

For the other comparison modes it will always match to 'equals' no stars without any stars selected in the comparison.

It is the >=,  <= & = signs that change grey to white to show the active mode. (Though because they are small it is hard to tell). This comparison test only works against stars not flags or colours etc.

Thanks for the reply, this is helpful information that the star filter is essentially active by default. However, at least on my computer, a Macbook Pro running the latest Macos with the most recent LRC, the <= symbol is not white when active, it's dark grey. Its tone is nearly indistinguishable (if not completely indistinguishable - at the very least it is the exact same tone as the inactive stars) from the "with/without edits" indicator just to the left of it. At no point does the >=, <=, or = symbol change to the same tone as the flags or any of the other indicators' tone when they are active. I would assert that this is inconsistent to the point of being fairly confusing and leads to situations where the active filters are very difficult to ascertain without a close inspection. I would expect as a user of this software that the filter state should be easy and obvious to determine at a glance. Now that I'm aware of this behavior I don't think I will be quite as confused in the future as I was today, but I think it is safe to say that the equality symbols should be the same white as the other active filter symbols if the star filter is active.
