P: Warning when using match total exposure with adaptive profiles

Has anyone else taken a bunch of images they have applied the adapative colour profile to, and then used "match total exposures"?  I find that when I do this totally messes up... now the adaptive profiles obviously do a lot of jiggery pokery behind the scenes and from what I can see try to get a vaguely evenly distributed histogram (which is great btw).

 

So my guess is that one shouldn't really use match total exposures when using adaptive profiles, which I have no issue with, in which case should LR not pop up some sort of warning like it does if you click on the "auto" button when using the adapative profile?  Maybe an idea for an improvement?  Am using v14.3 of LrC

That behavior doesn't surprise me -- the two commands do completely different things.

 

Adaptive Color applies to the raw photo's pixels, disregarding any Develop settings, using AI to get a "pleasing" result as trained on photos produced by professional photographers. 

 

Whereas Match Total Exposures adjusts the Exposure slider of the target photo so that is has the same virtual exposure value (EV) as the source photo. The exposure value simply represents the combination of shutter speed, f-stop, and ISO speed as recorded in the photo's metadata by the camera.

 

Since Adaptive Color pays no attention to camera exposure metadata, and small changes in the photo's pixels can result in visually large differences in the AI-generated output, it's expected that you'll get "surprising" results combining the two.
