Virtual Copy create history entry

I will often create a VC at a point where I am happy with what I have, but want to diverge or try other things. Later, I may want to understand at what point in the development I created the VC(s).

I requested that, when a VC is created, an entry be made in the history list, indicating the creation…and, if possible, the VC’s copy name.

In general, I don’t use Snapshots, so I had forgotten about this feature:

In History, right-click on the History step you want the Snapshot to be created and choose “Create Snapshot...” from the context menu. The Create Snapshot will be opened with the History Step as the name of the Snapshot. Here, I right-clicked on the Dehaze +15 15 step in History; the Create Snapshot is given the name Dehaze +15 15 from that History Step, so I only need to click Create:

@drtonyb thanks, interesting. Unfortunately, it doesn’t solve my original problem….which was creating record of VC creation in history. I was going to try to use snapshots to create the entry (actual create a multiaction button on Loupedeck or Streamdeck execution VC and Snapshot), but that doesn’t work.

So basically, I can get a history entry when I publish to SmugMug or (via Jeff Friedl plugin) when I export….but not when I create a VC or Snapshot…..bummer….needed!

‘Snapshots’ can do something similar to your suggestion. You get the date/time shown in both History and Snapshot panels.

With Virtual Copies you only get the date created shown in the VC history and no prior edit history.

@Rob_Cullen Thanks, but….

After posting, I realized that I should have specifically mentioned that I was aware of snapshots and they did not meet my needs. Mostly, when I create a VC, I want a copy to easily export, modify, put in collection or publish. Snapshots don’t give me that.

So think outside the box and do both. Create a snapshot as your time reference, immediately followed by that virtual copy…
