Better folder organization and management tools

Ok, this is unfortunately but NECESSARILY vague and general.

I have a lot of albums and folders. I’m trying to clean up my organization, on a MacBook. Correct if I’m wrong the tool I have to work with is basically: drag and drop. That’s it.

None of:

  • Bulk edit, multi select
  • Search
  • Cut and paste
  • Even a modal move tool like you have on the phone (aka select a folder to move and then in a separate action select the destination)

All I have is drag and drop :(

I’d love to see anything else to help me move my albums around in my folder structure.

FWIW, I use fastmail.fm as my mail provider. When you select a mail message and start a move operation they give you a view of the target mail folder hierarchy. You can type to search and the view will dynamically filter out the folders that don’t match (while retaining all relevant parents in the hierarchy). If your search narrows down to a single result you can simply hit return to finalize. Otherwise you can use the mouse or cursors to select from the remaining choices.

It’s freaking awesome and it’s painful to think about just using “drag and drop” to solve this same problem. I’m almost giving up on my reorganization task because the tools are so poor. I might be better off creating a new album, setting it as a target album and adding the photos to the new album and then deleting the new album.

(Obviously drag and drop is worse when you try to use the offscreen auto-scroll affordance.)

I suppose I must admit that “moving a mail message to a folder” is a far more fundamental tasks in a MUA than “move an album to a different folder” in LR. I think this will remain a dream.

In the meantime the best workaround I can think of is to use an extremely dense and deep folder hierarchy so that using collapsing I can fit any album and any folder onto the same screen.
