P: Add left/right swiping to go back and forward on mobile devices

Adding left/right swiping to navigate back and forward in Adobe Lightroom on mobile devices would greatly enhance the user experience and streamline the editing workflow. With a swipe gesture, users could effortlessly move back saving time and reducing the need for trying to tap the backwards arrow, which can be missed requiring additional taps to get back. This interaction would provide a fluid and natural way to navigate, empowering users to focus more on their creative process and make quick adjustments on the go. It's all about convenience and efficiency, making editing in Lightroom a seamless and enjoyable experience for mobile users.

However I am still baffled by the inconsistencies between the LR mobile and LR and LR Classic. The all deviate in workflow and features more than I find plausible:

There are some differences between LR Desktop and LR Mobile. Classic is a different ballgame entirely. Of the differences you noted though, some are incorrect.

LR Mobile doesn't denoise or Defringe - yes, correct

LR Desktop doesn't export JPGs with HDR gain maps - no, it does, I just tested

HEIF - no, HEIF/HEIC is supported

Naming is intentional - Local mode on Desktop is very different than Device mode on Mobile due to operating system differences. Desktop Local lets you edit directly in the local file system whereas Mobile Device mode automatically adds photos to the cloud when they're edited.

Thank you, Victoria! That comment was very helpful. I do see now that Rikk's pinned answer refers to the device mode but did not get it when I originally posted.

So my problem was that I was used to being in the Lightroom tab when starting LR as this is where you usally leave that app. Starting the app for the first time on the new iPad obviously put me in the device tab without me even realizing this. Frankly I did not even know that device view / mode allows editing which added to my consfusion. So, so sorry for the noise.

However I am still baffled by the inconsistencies between the LR mobile and LR and LR Classic. The all deviate in workflow and features more than I find plausible:

  • LR Mobile e.g. does not support AI based denosing (do not tell me that the HW is not powerful enough) or even custom removal of chromatic abberation.
  • LR (standard) does not support the export of JPG files with HDR gain maps while LR classic and LR mobile do. HDR TIFF files are only supported by Lightroom Classic. None of your apps supports HEIF files which I assume can only be due to political or fincancial / licensing reasons (sigh).
  • Even naming is not consistent: In LR mobile I get (translated from German) "Cloud" und "Local" tabs and in LR it is - as discussed - "Device" and "Lightroom" (even the order of the tabs differs)

One more detail that should be noted here... this preference only applies to the Device mode (where you're looking through photos that are in the main Photos app, not Lightroom). The Lightroom mode (where you're viewing photos in LR's database) always allows you to swipe through photos.

Thank you for answering so quickly, Rikk.

Where do I find the technology preview then? I am using the German UI and all I have been able to find under app settings and beta is a function to turn on swiping before editing. The text box explicitly states that swiping is currently not possible anymore after editing.

And btw on my old iPad that fuction is not even turned on.

@Warrex  Read the pinned post on this thread - it explains how to turn it back on.

What is the reasoning behind this change? I switched from an M1 iPad to the latest M4 iPad and I can still use swiping while editing on the older iPad but not on the new one. In other words the functionality is still there in the latest Lightroom release just not accessible after reinstalling.

This is absolutely rage-inducing when being used to swiping and it is SLOW. Pleae revert this change.

This new "feature" is so disruptive and tanks my workflow! I edit almost exclusively on my iPhone. Just upgraded to the iPhone 15, and I guess with it came the new Lightroom. I've been using Adobe products for 20 years now, this has to be the WORST update yet. Go back to the way it was. I need to swap back and forth to decide which photos to keep, which to dump, and apply previous edits. I'm constantly toggling between images. Please please please change it back. The swipe preview still doesn't solve the issue. I need to swipe while editing.

On Lightroom mobile, what happened to the option where we can just swipe left or right to see the next photo we need to edit? Please make this option available again. It disrupts our editing workflow without it. Thank you so much.
