The notes shown on the latest InDesign 18.2.1 update indicate that this version solves the colour discrepancy between using CPU and GPU Preview modes in Mac Ventura. Unfortunately, it has made no difference in my case. Colours still look much more saturated in CPU preview and overprint than GPU preview as before. This happens both when attached to my external monitor and also when it is disconnected (restart after disconnect). MacOS 13.0.1 M1 Max MacBook Pro 1TB 32GB Ram External Monitor - BenQ SW2700 27" via thunderbolt to DisplayPort.

Rob - I believe you are showing the Acrobat Panel again and not the InDesign Panel which I have shown below. As I have already mentioned, this is not about Acrobat, I do not have a problem with Acrobat, it's about how the flattener preset for PDF/X-1a works directly out of InDesign. Also the RGB vs CMYK output argument has nothing to do with what I am talking about. The way InDesign flattens artwork using PDF/X-1a does not work the same way that Adobe Acrobat does, even though it is supposed to be using the same PDF Standard. I would recommend to anyone creating complex large format graphics using transparency in InDesign to either.... 1. Flatten complex backgrounds within Photoshop and re-import into InDesign before outputting the final PDF. OR 2. Open the PDF file you have exported from InDesign and resave using Adobe Acrobat with the following settings File > Save as other > Press Ready PDF/X-1a

Bob - Illustrator seems to provide a fairly accurate representation of how the PDF looks when printed (although it's no guarantee). Rob - Yes it was printed on a large format inkjet (sometimes I have no control over the end product i.e who prints the file). Steve - Not really sure how that helps in terms of presets - PDF/X-1a does not have a lot of options - the file output is supposed to adhere to the generic PDF/X-1a printing standard. The top image is how the board is printed (and how the PDF looks when opened in Illustrator) This is how InDesign exports a PDF/X-1a standard PDF (the whole background colour gradient box is missing). This image is the same PDF - however, it has been resaved in Acrobat using File > Save as other > Press Ready PDF/X-1a Just to be clear - the only reason I am using Illustrator is to show the difference, they both look correct and exactly the same when viewing the PDF within Acrobat

Thanks for the replies. Derek - PDF/X-4 won't automatically flatten the artwork whereas PDF/X-1a does not support transparency so it will automatically flatten the artwork. Steve - the panel you have shown is from the Acrobat settings which I don't have an issue with. It is the way InDesign exports PDF/X-1a which is the problem. The large format panel which did not print correctly was quite complex and had large graduated colour box with a bitmap image placed over the top which had a basic feather applied. The background colour box failed to print at all. My tests have shown that when exporting as a PDF/X-1a directly from InDesign (PDF looks fine on-screen), and then opened in Illustrator the background fails to show up. However, when the PDF file is resaved within Acrobat with settings as previously shown it will show correctly within Illustrator.

I have had issues with a large format display panel that did not print out the background correctly due to the transparency not flattening correctly. I have done some tests and found that when Exporting a PDF file from InDesign using the PDF Preset PDF/X-1a it does not actually flatten the image correctly. However, when I open the saved PDF file in Acrobat and then save the PDF again using > File > Save as other > Press Ready PDF/X-1a this then flattens the background correctly. Can someone explain why InDesign doesn't use the same conversion/fix-ups when producing a PDF/X-1a file? I am currently producing 36 large format panels for an indoor exhibition and I would rather not have to export each PDF and then have to resave them all again.

Why is the InDesign GPU Performance enhancement only for Retina displays? Photoshop and Illustrator both have this option and it doesn't require a retina display to function. Could this new coding for the GPU being added be one of the causes for the the slow screen redraw issue as per the earlier video link I posted. Perhaps Adobe can make the next version of ID have the GPU enhancement work on 2560 x 1440 monitors as well, or any monitor come to that.

Sorry but I disagree and haven't found turning off those options helps on my Mac Pro running InDesign 2017. You can see how slowly InDesign 2017 redraws multiple text boxes on an older upgraded Mac Pro 4.1 in the link shown below, this is far slower than the 2015 version of InDesign (which is still much slower than it should be). How on earth can drawing a few dozen text boxes on a screen take so long on a super computer, I am pretty sure Quark 3.2 running on an old Mac Quadra 800 was as fast if not faster than this back in the 1990's (over 20 years ago!!!!) Yea, they should just have a preference added which turns off all the cloud paraphernalia that a lot of people don't need or want. InDesign should just be as fast as hell on pretty much any 5 year old machine these days. Quark 3 on an old PowerMac was faster than the 2017 version of InDesign!

The GPU feature is only available to the following Macs according to Adobe. My Screen is 27inch, 2560 x 1440, and is therefore not high enough resolution, so that feature is greyed out and unavailable. So obviously changes have been made to the code when utilising the computers graphics card with a serious degrade on performance, unless you are using the very latest GPU's. I hope this was not intentional and just got missed during testing, cough! cough! I cannot fathom why 40 text boxes on a page would be more GPU intensive than a modern 3D game.

Sorry but it makes absolutely no difference, I just tried it again with all panels closed. Have you tried the test yourself, unless you're on a 5K iMac I would guess you are going to see similar slowdown.

Yea, I think everyone will have this problem unless they have a 5K iMac as they can turn on the GPU setting to speed it up (now confirmed by a 5k iMac user who didn't see any slow down). I hope Adobe don't expect us to upgrade our Macs to 5K just so we can draw a few dozen text boxes on the page without it grinding to a halt! I can play Fallout 4 on pretty high settings with a fairly decent frame rate, but when it comes to a few text boxes on a page using InDesign 2017 my computer acts like a ZX Spectrum.

I have created a new simpler video showing the slow redraw problem in Adobe CC InDesign 2017, but surely this should have been picked up by testers before release, I hope software companies dont expect their customers to do the testing for them nowdays on products that are not really ready for release? The video link below shows duplicating text boxes, grouping them and then cutting and pasting the boxes. You can see how slow it gets, if others would like to perform the same test on their machines then please go ahead and let me know if you suffered from the same slowdown. Screen Recording - Sendvid It's just some boxes on a page for Goodness sake, I would have laughed my head off 15 years ago if I could have looked into the future and seen layout software in 2017 drawing boxes on a page this slowly in an age of supercomputers as standard! The computer performing the above test is getting on a bit now, but can run other software just fine. Other software was not running - InDesign preferences were all turned to minimum Font managment plugins are unistalled Advanced type functions turned off. If you're using a Mac then try using the uninstaller within the application folder and uninstall all InDesign CC versions. Restart computer and run disk first aid. Then reinstall InDesign 2015 from the Adobe Creative Cloud App, I would stick with 2015 as 2017 is definitely slower... see my video comparison here of cutting and pasting grouped text boxes (they are not tables)... I made a video of the difference in screen redraw speed between InDesign 2015 vs InDesign 2017. I posted this in another thread, but you can clearly see the massive difference in speed between them. Software is running on my Mac Pro 2009 (upgraded) Mac OS El Captian 3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2048 MB 32 GB Ram The text boxes were not tables, but individual text boxes grouped together and the speed difference between them is huge. When there are many elements on a page InDesign 2017 basically becomes unusable due to the slowdown. The video showing the difference in screen redraw speed is linked below..... Indesign vers comparison - Sendvid I uninstalled and then reinstalled both software programs JUST before doing this test, no other software was running except for Mail and Chrome. I also adjusted the InDesign preferences as below. FontExplorer plugins were removed from both Display performance = Typical for both. Type Contextual Controls = Turned off for both. Live Screen Drawing = Delayed for both. Type kit = Turned Off. The response I received is shown below.... Thanks Zoe, I have received your document and it was really useful. And we were able to recreate this issue locally. As mentioned by you "Tables" could be used here for better performance. So, for this case workaround is present for customers. However, we will perform required analysis and profiling related to redraw performance using this scenario. This might led to improvement in redraw performance of some other areas in future releases. Again thanks for your feedback. -Sumit To be honest I was hoping for more than this, as currently InDesign 2017 is pretty unusable for my work, its obviously a problem, unless of course its just sloppy programming or perhaps 'making the software slower on purpose so people need to buy a faster machine' pretty sure this has been going on for years. Indesign is now literally slower than Quark 3.3 running on an old Mac Quadra 800 some 20 years ago.... what the hell, come on you guys!!!

Hopefully Adobe will release an update soon which will fix this problem. I can mark the question answered once the new update fixes this. Sumit, thanks for the reply, I have sent the document, although I'm not really sure how this particular document would help other than show how slowly it redraws in InDesign 2017 compared to InDesign2016 when there a multiple element on a page. I forgot to say that I had also turned off type kit in Adobe Cloud in the above test. I realise that producing the same information in a table rather than lots of text boxes would display more quickly, however that was not really what I was after. I wanted to show the difference in general redraw speed, but if you are able to supply any help in that respect then I would be grateful.
