Question

Drive configuration for 3-4 multicam editing

I'm finished building a new computer with the following parts...

x299 Gigabyte Aorus Ultra Gaming Pro

MSI Duke 1080ti

64gb DDR4 HyperX Predator Black 2666MHz

intel i9 7900x - 10 cores

I had a few questions about optimal hard drive configurations for premiere...Mainly 3-4 multicam projects using GH4 and GH5 4k footage.  (ranging from Raid 5 with WD red drives to SSD to NVMe M.2)

I currently have the following items available...

(6) NAS WD Red 3TB drives

(1) SAMSUNG 970 PRO M.2 512gb

(2) Samsung 850 Pro SSD 256gb

(1) Samsung 840 EVO SSD 500gb

(1) OWC 240gb SSD Pro 6G

My current plan is the following.

OS Drive = Samsung 850 Pro SSD 256gb

Current Project & Source Drive = SAMSUNG 970 PRO M.2 512gb

*Archive projects Raid 5 = (6) NAS WD Red 3TB drives (15TB)

Media cache and scratch Drive = Samsung 850 Pro SSD 256gb

How does the above configuration look?  Is there another configuration which might be better?

*Raid 5 - I'm considering using the bios in the x299 Gigabyte mobo to configure Raid 5 or Windows 10 software Raid.  I know I could get a controller card for the raid, but is it entirely necessary?  I've used SoftRaid for years with my Mac and it's been very reliable and quick...Can the same be said for windows or bios solutions?

Thanks for any help,

Dave

Bill Gehrke has some thoughts on this from his PPBM test work over the years. And it's been evolving with the rise of the very fast new-gen SSD drives especially some of the m.2 and nvme ones. Jim's layout has been the standard one with 'spinning' discs, and work with SSDs too of course.

But Bill has some ideas on what you need to have, and within the drives, what goes where. Including using a 'standard' SSD for OS/programs, and the m.2/nVme drive for projects & such. Spinners for project/media storage for non-active projects, things like that.

    I recommend the following:

    C: System

D: Project files, audio files, still images

    E: Cache and Scratch

    F: Camera media only

    G: Exports

You have enough to make that work.

I use two OWC Thunderbays as Raid backups of my media on a windows environment and I'm using Storage Spaces as my software raid.

The one drawback of Windows software raid is that I've had a hard time finding a good monitoring program that's as well developed as Softraid. I wish Softraid would release a windows version.
