Question

I’m DONE.

I have been using adobe products and premiere for over 10 years professionally, and almost 20 years now in general. but the level of dysfunctionality with this crumbling software has finally reached its peak as i'm concerned.

Premiere has always had its issues, but trying to edit this short film since january 2022 has been the absolute biggest nightmare imaginable. I have wasted hours upon hours trouble shooting issues that bring my day to a hault- from bad design/UI decisions to absurd bugs that have useless work arounds (disable gpu acceleration on my brand new custom editing pc is no kind of solution) - I must spend 60-70 percent of my time pulling my hair out in frustration and this is not an exaggeration.

I am blown away but how terrible this software has become and at this point I feel like I deserve my money back because Premiere "pro" is LITERALLY unusable garbage.

For what it's worth I'm using a PC with a ryzen threadripper 3960 with 128 GB ram and an RTX 3090. There is simply NO excuse for what I have been encountering on a daily basis, causing my project to take months longer than it should have to complete and causing me immense frustration and stress. There hasn't been a shred of enjoyment through what was once my passion thanks to this situation.

Crashing on rendering despite days of work arounds. Cursors disappearing for no reason. Audio dropping out randomly. red giant plug ins working 40% of the time or else causing even more issues. Slow as hell playback despite 1080 proxies of all my footage AND set to 1/8th playback quality. I could go on and on and on...

Perhaps this is more of a rant than anything- but I have to blow off steam in a way that doesn't result in a broken monitor. Adobe- I thought illustrator was your worst program, but with premiere over the last decade you have lowered that bar to the center of the earth and pole vaulted over it.

I will NEVER use premiere again. - that is, of course,  if i can ever get premiere to work long enough to finish this last project. As a loyal customer for my entire career, I am so, so disappointed.

My only advice on the way out the door is to demolish this abomination and rebuild it from the ground up. Because it's only getting less stable with each update.

@sncfrk

Sounds like you're experiencing some serious workstation issues.

Have you tried following any system configuration guides or consulting with someone who specializes in video edtiing post-production hardware configuration?

Sometimes I work on a AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X 64-Core Processor 2.9 GHz, 256GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce RTX3090 24GB setup and it runs Premiere Pro, After Effects, Media Encoder, Photoshop, and Illustrator pretty well.  2020, 2021, and 2022 are all installed, butI typically stick with 2021.  Maxon One is also installed.

One thing that may or may not be different is that the editing workflow is ProRes based.

I agree the GUI changes were a total waste of time. Why not make all the transition and effects GPU accelerated?

I have noticed playback performance becoming a really big issue. You would think the Mercury Playback Engine would get better and better not worse and worse. You cannot even suggest people switch to half resolution because on some systems Premiere Pro does not scale the CPU and GPU resources accordingly. Premiere Pro used to be great! I cannot help but think the people who created the Mercury Playback Engine have quit or retired. Below is a a video of the CPU and GPU performance not scaling correctly.

Wow, that's a load of pain. Totally understand your feelings there!

I've got a 3960x 24-core, 128GB of RAM, with a 2080Ti, very similar to yours. And I'm getting the best performance with Premiere I've ever had, whether with H.264, ProRes, BRAW, even Red & mxf files.

And to me, that discrepancy between experiences ... yours has been terrible while mine's been in all very good .... is a problem in and of itself.

As one of the volunteers around here the last few years, it used to be a lot easier to suggest fixes to things. At the moment, well ... it can be very difficult to puzzle out why two users with similar kit, similar media & workflow, get almost totally opposite results.

My one additional comment ... I use Resolve near daily also, and also participate on the LGG and BlackMagic forums. And since Resolve has been chasing being the Adobe-alternative, with the aim to work for all gear with all media with all operating systems and all workflows ... the number of user issues there has also gone up.

I think the whole goal of being one-size-fits-all ... isn't as workable as we users would appreciate.

But in the end, these apps and our gear are only tools ... fancy hammers. Use whichever tool works best to get your work out the door. The branding/marketing doesn't matter at that point.

appreciate your reply. glad you're having a good time with premiere, would love to be able to say the same but never works out that way. Maybe one day
