Acrobat 8 download causes Word to crash

I've had Acrobat 8 working perfectly on my old computer.  When I loaded it from disk onto my new one, I was told the registration system had changed and was advised to download it instead and was given a new licence number.  It seemed to download correctly but it will not create a pdf from within Word.  Moreover, it causes Word to crash, with the error message "Word is running into problems with the “pdfmaker.officeaddin” add-in."  Advice please?

Acrobat 8 is quite an old version and is not compatible with the current versions of Windows or Office, so problems are to be expected.

Did you upgrade Windows on your new computer? Did you upgrade Word? If so, you can't skip upgrading Acrobat too.

Yes - it has Windows 10 and Word 2016.  What version of Acrobat to I need to upgrade to (I note from the website that I can't upgrade to 11)?

Adobe only sells the current version: Acrobat DC (or Acrobat 2017 if you

get the perpetual license version, instead of the subscription).
