Acrobat Reader crashes opening LibreOffice user guide

Previously reported at https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172842 where it was confirmed by another user (running Windows 11) but not resolved. I am running Windows 10.

I downloaded the Libre Office user guide and opened it. Acrobat Reader crashed.

I downloaded it again and did a binary compare - both versions were identical, and Acrobat Reader crashes each time.

I open hundreds of PDFs and have never seen Acrobat Reader crash before.

I am using Adobe Acrobat Reader version 2026.001.21691 (64 bit).

I checked for updates and at the time of writing there are none.

I opened the file in PDF Creator v11.30.1 which did not crash.

Procedure to trigger the crash:

Open https://books.libreoffice.org/en/ -

Clicking “Download PDF” button opens https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/rbd2ipG6RP8F779

I click the three dots on the LH side of the black bar and downloaded the file.

Opening that file crashes Acrobat Reader.

User guide details:

File timestamp: 2026-07-10 10:25:28

File size: 28,042,338 bytes

File crc32: 77fed130

I do have Visual Studio on this machine but I don’t use it, so I don’t know how to export the call stack. I did notice that after the first dozen or so entries the same 8 entries were repeated over and over again.

Thank you for the detailed report, @xqp .

This issue looks like file-specific issue.

We have forwarded the issue to our engineering teams for further investigation.

    Hi Akash,

    OK, thanks for that.

Please update the thread if it’s a non-conformance in the file.

If so I’ll report it back to the LibreOffice team.

    Hi @xqp,

Thank you for the incredibly detailed report, and for linking the Bugzilla ticket.

To recap: Acrobat Reader 2026.001.21691 (64-bit) crashes every time on GS262-GettingStarted.pdf (28,042,338 bytes, CRC32 77fed130). The crash reproduces on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 with matching event log signatures (exception code0xc000041d, same fault offset in Acrobat.dll), and the file opens without issue in several other PDF viewers.

Given how reproducible this is, we'd like to test it internally. Before we do, could you help us with two quick things:

    1. Please run the Acrobat Diagnostics tool with Advanced logs enabled, and share both the diagnostic and crash logs. In Acrobat Reader, go to Menu (hamburger) > Help > Troubleshoot Acrobat, select Advanced logs, choose the options you want to include, then select Start diagnostics and reproduce the crash. Once collected, please upload the logs to a cloud drive (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox) and share the link here. Details on the tool and where logs are saved: https://adobe.ly/4fnkqyB

    2. Does the crash still occur with Protected Mode disabled? Go to Menu > Preferences > Security (Enhanced), and under Sandbox Protections, uncheck Enable Protected Mode At Startup, then restart Acrobat Reader and try the file again. Please note this is for testing purposes only; we recommend re-enabling it afterward. Reference: https://adobe.ly/3R5pfon

Once we have those, we'll take this further from our side.

    Thanks,
    ^BS

    Hi BaniVerma,

Looking at the page for the first option I don’t have a Help > Troubleshoot Acrobat option in my Acrobat Reader, nor <hamburger> > Preferences.

I do have Edit > Preferences, but can’t see anything about troubleshooting. Is this only available in the full product?

In the second option, I disabled protected mode under  Edit > Preferences > Sandbox Protections and restarted. Acrobat Reader still crashes when opening the file.
