Adobe Acrobat is asking me if I want to save a PDF I opened that I downloaded from the internet, even if I did not make any changes to the PDF. This happened after an update to the software. I am running Adobe Acrobat 2026.001.21563.

I have troubleshooted this issue from forums online, I have looked it over with a senior IT technician at the company I work at, and we looked at quite a few settings in the preferences menu and tried uninstalling and reinstalling Acrobat, and same thing I get the same issue. I work in printing as well, so another issue is when I download and drop a file in the Command Workstation app for printing, that app doesn’t recognize the file.  I have to open and save it first, then drop it in the app for it to recognize the PDF.

I’m trying to determine if this is something to do with an update that Adobe put out or if it’s something else

Any advice would be great, thanks.

    Hello @joe_4062 ,

Thank you for providing the detailed information and troubleshooting steps already performed.

Based on your description, there are two behaviors occurring:

    • Acrobat prompts to save the PDF even though no intentional edits were made
    • A third-party application does not recognize the downloaded PDF until it has been opened and saved in Acrobat

The second point is particularly helpful, as it may indicate that the PDF is being modified, repaired, or rewritten when Acrobat saves the file.

To better understand what is changing, could you please provide:

    • A sample PDF that exhibits the issue
    • The source of the PDF (for example, downloaded from a website, generated by a specific application, etc.)
    • Whether the behavior occurs with all downloaded PDFs or only certain files
    • A short screen recording showing the workflow
    • The operating system and version

As a test, you may also try:

    • Opening the PDF and immediately closing it without interacting with the document
    • Reviewing whether Acrobat still prompts to save changes
    • Using File > Properties before and after saving to see whether any document metadata has changed

Based on the information provided, it is difficult to determine whether this is related to a recent Acrobat update, a specific PDF structure, or content that Acrobat is automatically repairing when the file is opened.

A sample file would help us investigate further and determine what changes Acrobat is detecting.
