Adobe Acrobat Reader Crash on Startup – EXCEPTION_STACK_OVERFLOW (0xc00000fd)

Hello

I am unable to start Adobe Acrobat Reader.

The application closes immediately at launch and generates a crash report.

The crash report shows the following error: EXCEPTION_STACK_OVERFLOW (0xc00000fd)

The recurring function calls seem to originate from the plug-in "Annots.api" (version 25.1.21111.0), which appears to enter a recursive loop inside PlugInMain.

System information:

- Adobe Acrobat Reader version: 25.001.21111

- OS: Windows 11 Pro, build 26200

- CPU: Intel i5-10500 - GPU: Intel UHD 630

- RAM: 8 GB

I have already tried:

- Rebooting the PC

- Reinstalling Acrobat Reader

- Removing leftover folders after uninstall

- Checking for OS and driver updates The issue persists.

Could you please help me resolve this problem or provide guidance on how to repair or replace the Annots.api plug‑in?

Thanks

Thank you for the confirmation @dmmario

Yes, there was an official release for Acrobat and Reader 25.001.211xx. Planned update, Feb 02, 2026 (Incremental release, available for 10% user base), which fixes performance issues, and I am glad that the new build has fixed the issue for you.

Thanks for your time and cooperation. Please feel free to reach out if you need any assistance.

    Regards,

    Anand Sri.

    Hello AnandSri

Thanks for the reply. I went to the indicated link but I don't see the Log Collector software, the page says to use Adobe Crash Report, should I use that?
    Thank you

@dmmario last week, there was a Windows 11 Security Update that actually wreck havoc on users computers. To the point, where Acrobat doesn’t work properly to even worse, some PC users couldn’t even reboot their PC’s! Eeck!

Microsoft is recommending to uninstall this patch!

I don't think it was due to this update, on the PCs where this error occurs this patch is not yet installed, isn't it due to some Adobe update?
