Adobe Acrobat Reader Error Message

I keep getting an error message saying that I cannot open files that I had saved to PDF.  It is so very frustrating.

Adobe Acrobat Reader could not open 'GE Refridgerator manual.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Any ideas?  I have a lot of files that I can not open.  Am I using the wrong product?
