My Adobe Acrobat Reader has become slow over the past one month in my Macbook. I use it to read my pdf books synced with cloud, and highlight important topics in it. It takes atleast 10-15 seconds to highlight. Sometimes i have to go over and over again to do highlight. It is also slow in scrolling through the book. The book is 65 MB.  I have tried updating it, closing the app and opening it again, resetting the cloud sync time to 90 minutes. But nothing works. Kindly help.

Hello Dianat,

We apologize for the inconvenience caused, as per the description above, Adobe Reader is opening the PDF files very slow, Is that correct?

Make sure that you have the latest version of Adobe Reader installed, check for any pending updates of Adobe Reader from help>check for updates, reboot the machine after updating the Adobe Reader.

Reset the Preferences of Adobe Reader and reboot the machine, to reset the Preferences, refer to the steps mentioned in the article How to reset Acrobat Preference settings to default. and see if this brings any difference.

Also, disable the hardware rendering from Adobe Reader's Preferences, navigate to Edit>Preferences>3D and Multimedia>uncheck "Enable hardware rendering for legacy video"

For testing purpose, please disable the Protected Mode of Adobe Reader and see if this brings any difference. Navigate to Edit>Preferences>Security(Enhanced)>Uncheck "Enable Protected Mode at startup"

Note: Disabling Protected Mode is for troubleshooting purpose only. Enable Protected Mode back on.

What is the version of Adobe Reader installed? To identify, refer to Identify the product and its version for Acrobat and Reader DC

Is it a Mac or Windows machine and what is the version of operating system installed?

Is it specific to one PDF or with all the PDF files?

Let us know how it goes and share your findings.

Regards,

Anand Sri.

Hello Anand Sri,

I was having a similar problem as the original poster and I followed the steps you described to troubleshoot. Disabling Protected Mode solved the problem for me. Re-enabling Protected Mode caused Acrobat to slow to a crawl again. What do you suggest be done at that point?

Thanks,

Spencer
