I have always been able to combine files in Adobe fine - all of a sudden I am taken to Cloud Adobe to do so, which means I have to upload the files, which can take a really long time

How do I go back to combining files within the Adobe program??

Sounds like you may not be opening or trying to combine in Acrobat Pro but are using Acrobat Reader instead. So, be sure you have Acrobat Pro opened and do your work through that application.

Amazing, thanks so much for your help

Any idea how I make the Pro DC the default, so that when I open any PDF docs, it opens in Pro DC & not with reader?  Do I just uninstall reader off my computer

If you're using Windows, just highlight a pdf file on your computer, right-click and select "Open with>Choose default program", select Acrobat Pro and make sure the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked.
