Adobe Reader can't open newly downloaded PDFs or PDFs in browser

I have tried to open pdfs through multiple browsers to no avail. Each time I get the message attached below when the pdf attempts to open in a new browser tab. The latest version of adobe reader is installed. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I have tried multiple browsers. I have tried repairing the install through adobe reader itself. I have tried restarting the computer after each uninstall/install. I have downloaded many pdfs using different browsers perfectly fine until yesterday. Not sure what steps I can take from here.
