Adobe Reader DC crashes using older proprietary program

We use an older proprietary program that houses scanned images/pdf's and you click it will open Adobe.  You can view pdf and see it but a few click around it will crash every time.  There was a patch we saw from Jan and have applied it.  Have changed protected mode on / off etc etc and also tried all different types of compatibility settings for the adobe exe.  But not sure what else to do.
