Question

Adobe Reader DC - Multiple PDF Files at Once

When accessing PDF files stored on our file server users are unable to open more than one at a time when double clicking PDF files from network shares. Please consider the following (by "opening" we mean double clicking):

  • If opening PDFs from a local drive we can open more than one at a time
  • If opening PDFs from Outlook we can open more than one at a time (temp copy saved to local profile?)
  • If opening from a network share we cannot open more than one at a time
    • With one PDF already open, we can open another PDF from the File>Open menu within Adobe Reader
  • With Protected Mode disabled we can open more than one at a time from network shares
  • Adding network share as a trusted source has no effect

We would really like to keep Protected Mode enabled and have the ability to open more than one PDF at a time while browsing network shares and double clicking on them. Is there any known fix for this problem?

EDIT: If an Adobe employee tells me "Protected Mode" is next to useless and doesn't really protect anything I will disable it.

Regards,
David

Hi David,

Sorry for the delay in response.

Disabling protected mode is not recommended. However, you may try whitelisting the location and check if the issue persists.

To whitelist, launch Reader> Edit> Preferences> Security(Enhanced) , under Privileged Locations whitelist network share path. Let us know if that helps.

If you already have figured a solution to this problem, please respond with your findings that will help others.

Hello Tariq Dar.

The topic starter already told you what "Adding network share as a trusted source has no effect"!

I have the same problem!

With disabled Protected Mode works fine, but it's not a solution.

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC 2017.012.20098 on Windows 10 Pro. Files on Windows Server 2016 and 2012R2.
