Adobe Reader DC will download but will not install

Question

I have a Windows 7 computer using Chrome.  Yesterday, for no apparent reason, my Adobe Reader DC simply stopped working.  When I attempt to overwrite it with a new install, when I click the .exe file to install the reader, I get the message below.  Another message says the "older version of Adobe Reader DC cannot be removed".  Why not?

You may try deleting the older files from root. There might be an issue of improper unistallation.
