Adobe Reader "(Not Responding)"

I have had this problem for awhile now.

Whenever I try to open a PDF document on my compuuter Adobe Reader opens it, but when I go to scroll or click on one of the tabs I get (Not Responding) in the title bar. I wait for a short time but it just hangs, and when I click anywhere in the window it goes opaque leaving only the red X cancel button clear.

I was running the latest version of Reader, but uninstalled it and installed an earlier version (9.4) thinking it might fix things, but still getting the same problem.

My system details: Win7 Home Premium 64-bit OS

The pdf file is Portable Document Format which has been developed by Adobe. Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is a free PDF file viewer for Windows. In this file, we can store both text and images. I've been having the same problems as described here and after reading the 82 entries in this thread I decided to google "Reader X not responding" and found this website: HOW-TO: Resolve Freezing Acrobat Reader X

which describes how to switch off adobe reader X's ability to enable protected mode at start up.

After I followed the steps in the edit->preferences->general tab, my Reader X versions 10.1.16 seems to be running properly and much faster. I find it difficult to believe the fix is as simple as this and hope I haven't disabled any importand functionality in Reader X. If any Adobe experts would care to comment I would welcome it.

I am having the same problem so i just uninstalled all adobe reader versions and kept Adobe Pro XI and the opening and scrolling was better of existing pdf docs on my computer but the closing out of them still delays.

So PO'd and fed up with this issue .... the app freezes as 'not responding' no matter what I do once I open the app on it's own and/or any PDF file. Problem started after I did the recommended 'upgrade' to the latest version, supposedly for 'security reasons'. I am running 10.1.15 on MS Vista. I've checked for latest updates. I've attempted to do one of the recommendations in this list - see mskyer, july 17, 2015 - and can't as the app freezes up as soon as I try to select from the Preferences menu.

The app is pretty much useless to me at this point!

My problem just started this morning. When I try to print a PDF, I get the "not responding" sign. I tried uninstalling Adobe Reader and reinstalling, but that didn't help. I was able to send the PDF via email, so as far as I know, it's just the print function that causes the problem.

I am having a similar issue lately in Acrobat DC.

Cannot Save as PDF

There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to this.  Out of the blue I cannot save as in Acrobat DC.

Documents are very slow and extra laggy when viewing them.

Rather disappointing for a costly investment.

This is a problem with 3D rendering and Protected Mode, the solution to this is to:

Click Edit -> Preferences

1. Go to the "3D & Mutimedia" category in the list on the left.

2. Untick "Enable Hardware Rendering For Legacy Video Cards".

3. Select "Software" from the drop down menu next to Prerrered Renderer.

4. Go to the "Security Enhanced" category.

5. Untick "Enable Protected Mode at Startup".

What also helps to load the PDF more quickly:

1. Go to the "Page Display" category

2. Select "Single Page Continuous" from the drop down menu next to "Page Layout".

3. Enjoy Instant PDF loading.

This problem has annoyed me for months but this worked for me tonight -

  1. Open Adobe Reader X
  2. navigate to Edit->Preferences->General
  3. clear the check-mark at “Enable Protected Mode at startup”
  4. Click OK to save the changes (acknowledge the warning)
  5. Shutdown Adobe Reader X

Obviously, you need to do this quite quickly before Adobe crashes, however it's only 5 clicks and can be completed in a matter of seconds.

Hope this helps.
