Adobe Reader update freezes at "Checking for updates"

I'm running Adobe Reader DC, 2015 Release, Version 2015.020.20042.  When I select "Check for Updates", I get a popup window saying "Checking for updates", but nothing happens.  I'm running 64-bit Windows 7, and Task Manager shows no Networking activity, the Performance shows noting consuming CPU, and the Processes show *two* "AcroRd32.exe *32" processes (.7MB and 17MB). When the request to check for updates is made, a process "AdobeARM.exe *32" process is created.  I killed all Adobe processes and browser processes, but get the same result.  How can I complete the update?

Afternote: Killing all Adobe & browser processes, then launching Reader as admin still doesn't allow the check for updates to proceed beyond the aforementioned freeze.

I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader DC.
