Adobe Reader will not launch

I double-click on my Adobe Acrobat icon (I am using the free reader) but nothing happens.  I removed & re-iunstalled the app but had the same problem.  The pdf file type is associated with Adobe Reader.  I scanned the responses to this problem on your customer issues site but in the responses the site behind the solutions links included there were not found.

Could anyone help me with this?
