Annotation of text options in Adobe Acrobat Reader

In Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Ver. 2018.009.20050, which I believe to be the current version, I have the following questions:

  1. Should there be any text annotation capabilities beyond “Add sticky note” and “Highlight text?”  (Some Adobe web pages indicate directly typing into a document is possible, but I am unable to do so.)
  2. After entering text into a sticky note box, are there any outcome differences if one clicks on the “X” or on the “Post” button? !

Hello DFHall,

Sorry for the delayed response and inconvenience caused.

As Bernd correctly mentioned to use the Add text comment as"Add Text comment" tool is used to type text anywhere on the PDF page. The Add Text Comment tool is similar to the Add Text Box tool. For detailed information, please refer to Use annotation and drawing markup tools to add comments in PDFs, Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader

"Add Sticky notes" A sticky note has a note icon that appears on the page and a pop-up note for your text message. You can add a sticky note anywhere on the page or in the document area.

In Acrobat Reader, complete commenting tools are available only in PDFs that have commenting enabled. PDFs in a review workflow typically include commenting rights. for detailed information, please refer to Use annotation and drawing markup tools to add comments in PDFs, Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader

"Reply" button is for a PDF review where you type your reply if you are a part of a shared review or an email-based review.

For detailed information, please refer to the following docs Starting a PDF review, Adobe Acrobat Link: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/starting-pdf-review.html

Participating in a PDF review, Adobe Acrobat Link: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/participating-pdf-review.html

Feel free to update this discussion for any further assistance.

Anand Sri.

Anand, thank you for your reply.

I am puzzled.  When I tried “Add Text Comment” on a pdf document after seeing Bernd’s post I found I could insert an icon into some text, and like “Add a Sticky Note,” a popup window would display the added text.  Now when I try “Add Text Comment,” characters I type are overlaid on the existing text, even though the document’s Security Properties says Commenting is Allowed.  Do you understand this change in behavior?

Additional questions:

  1. Does Reader allow the user to actually edit existing text in a pdf document with Comments Allowed in the same manner as does Word in a docx document?
  2. In my latest experimenting with “Add Text Comment,” I was given the option of changing the font and the font size of added characters, but unlike Word, I didn’t find a way to identify the font name and size of the existing text so I could match it.  Is there a way to do that?
  3. After entering text into a Sticky Note box, are there any outcome differences if one clicks on the “X” or on the “Post” button?

Thanks for your help,

David

Thank you Bernd, I hadn’t found that option.

I see that it is similar to Add sticky note in functionality.  Other than placing a different icon in the text to mark where text has been added, is there any difference between “Add Text Comment” and “Add Sticky Note?”

What is the purpose of the “Reply” buttons in these two popup windows?
