Sorry to hear about the trouble.
As mentioned, the application Adobe Acrobat Reader didn't close after working on a pdf file. While closing the Reader did it give any specific error?
Since its a delay in response to your query, then I assume that the issue might have been resolved by now.
If you happen to experience the same issue in future, then you can follow the following troubleshooting steps-
- Open Activity Monitor through Search.
- Close all the Acrobat instances from running processes. You might need to force quit them.
- Reboot computer.
- Open Adobe Reader and check the update. Open Reader>Help>Check for update
- Still getting stuck or struggling to open PDF file, then uninstall application using cleaner tool Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs and install through- Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Install for all versions
