Can't open a file

The message reads, "If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer mat not be able to display this type of document". I downloaded the latest version of Adobe Reader but it still doesn't work.

    You need to set your Web browser to use Acrobat Reader instead of the inbuilt viewing engine. See https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/cant-view-pdf-web.html

    I don't get the option to check for updates when i click help
