can't open pdf's

hey gang 

i own a macbook pro retina mid 2012

operate macos catalina version 10.15.7

have an active subscription to adobe creative cloud version 5.6.5.58

and run adobe acrobat reader dc from my dock

suddenly to my surprise today

i can't open any pdf files

all i get is the spinning wheel

i have no option other than force quit

all software checked for updates today

previous versions sent to trash

i've logged out and restarted 

same pdf's can be opened with apple preview

problem is i can't sign and send them

i'm completely stuck

any feedback greatly appreciated

btw is there any way to call adobe directly ?
