Can't preview PDF in Outlook or MS File Explorer

Using Windows 11 amnd MS Office 265, Outlook Version 2408, 16 bit, I cannot preview PDF attachments. My Adobe program is Acrobat Pro.

I get the error "This file cannot be previewed because of an error with the PDF Preview Handler" in both Outlook and File Explorer. It started when I had to reset my computer for another problem, and after I reinstalled Adobe Pro. Double-clicking the attachment will open the file within Acrobat Reader DC as expected.  Many people have reported the same problem and suggested many solutions which I have tried and delineate below.

  • The PDF file icon represents that Adobe is the default.
  • Other previewers (Word, Excel and PowerPoint, for example) all show file attachment previews as expected.

System configuration:

  • Lenovo evo with >150gb of available disk space
  • Windows 11 with all current updates
  • Office 365 with all current update

Already tried:

  • Verified i am using 16 bit Office and Adobe.
  • Verified that Adobe Reader DC has all its defaults set correctly.
  • "Repaired" Adobe Reader DC.
  • In Outlook, I have gone to “File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center settings > Attachment Handling” and confirmed the “Turn off Attachment Preview” box is unchecked, and “PDF Preview Handler” is enabled/ticked in the list in the opened window.
  • Confirmed I am not using Power Toys.
  • Verified the registry entries that were mentioned in other troubleshooting suggestions and verified that one entry was not there per another suggestion.
  • I have note uninstalled and reinstalled Office or Windows, except when I reset the computer and the problem arose.

Any other potential options would be appreciated.

Thanks much for any assistance,

Phil
