Can't print large pdf files on Mac OS 10.3.3 / Adobe Acrobat Reader DC

I can print one page pdf's no problem. When I try to print a 17 page pdf it won't work and the printer (HP M452dw) ends up displaying a memory error. The problem isn't with the printer. I can print the file using my Microsoft Surface... no problem. On the Mac, I can open the pdf with Preview and print it out... no problem.

I deleted the Acrobat Reader from my Mac and downloaded and installed the latest version. I have checked for updates and there are not any available.

Any ideas on how to fix this???
