Cannot install Reader DC after installing Acrobat DC

Question

I installed the trial version of Acrobat DC a couple days ago. Now I want to install Reader DC so I can test what my PDFs will look like to Reader users after I create them in Acrobat. However, when I try to install Reader DC I get the message Adobe Acrobat Reader DC: Old/New Acrobat version already installed.

Is it conflicting with the newly installed Acrobat DC or perhaps an older deleted version of Reader? I may have had Reader installed on this machine years ago, but I am not seeing any trace of it in Uninstall, Control Panel, or Program Files.
How might I overcome this and load Reader DC on the same machine as Acrobat DC?

Thank you very much for this concise, clear, and logical answer, Bernd. You are saving me and a lot of other people from continuing to bang our heads against the wall. Do you happen to know of a link that will allow me to download the 32-bit version on my 64-bit machine and hopefully resolve this issue for me? All the approaches I've tried want to route me to downloading the 64-bit version.

I'm now seeing that my latest Reader is 64 bit and my latest Acrobat is 32 bit so apparently the two cannot co-exist regardless of 64 or 32 bit.
