Change Acrobat Reader default

Did anyone ever get an answer to this question? So much has changed since 2020, but I have the same question for the same reason. I made what turrned out to be the unfortunate mistake of choosing Acrobat as the default and now Adobe has all these mechanisms in place to not only slow or stop me from changing the default but to demand a re-up for the service as though I don't have an active subscription. I tried deleting the app from my system, but that prompted a clooud trial wall on the next open attempt, the next step of which was to choose a subscription level and provide a method of payment. Sheesh. I've always liked Adobe products, but their recent tactics and current marketing policies are coming across as aggressive, instrusive, and protectionist. (For any marketing wonks who might be listening, this is an anatomy study on how to alienate users.) Meanwhile, I've found a way to open docs in Preview instead of Acrobat, but the icon next to all PDF docs still appears as Acrobat and opening them triggers the whole update or trial subscription thing. Good God.
