Question

Charging for upgrades because the free version has bugs

On top of my commercial real estate investment business, I am also a licensed realtor, notary public, and certified loan signing agent.

When trying to print two (2) 150-page VA refinancing packets, my Brother printer would suddenly shut down and restart after 15-20 pages. At first I thought it was an issue with my dual tray laser printer, so I reached out to Brother's tech support. When we tested printing documents outside of Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, it printed fine but wouldn't print the legal pages on legal and the letter-sized pages on letter within the larger packet (having various page sizes in a document occurs in nearly 100% of the packets we print). For Mac users, Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is the preferred software for printing these kinds of documents to Brother laser printers.

When it was determined that it was an issue with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, I reached out to customer support at Adobe for assistance. It was confirmed that there is a bug within the free version of the software and when asked for the timeline for correction, the representative admitted that it was unknown. After being passed around to 6 DIFFERENT REPRESENTATIVES through the online chat, the collective wisdom and offering was to upgrade to Adobe Acrobat PRO for $14.99/month. Mind you, I had just paid $42 of my $90 commission to print the 300 pages at Office Max in order to bring the documents to the signer. Now the only solution is to pay for software with WAY more features than I need (open and print PDFs) because of a bug in the free software. This is unacceptable to me.

I was then offered a free 7-day trial of Adobe Acrobat PRO, but would be charged the fee following the free trial. This does not alleviate the problem. Unless Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is fixed within the 7 days, I am then required to pay. But if I cancel with 14 days of payment, then I can get a refund without a cancellation fee. This is a lot of subscription gymnastics.

I was then offered the software for $9.99/month. While this is a great price for what you get with Adobe Acrobat PRO, I don't need all the features. I just want to open and print PDFs.

I desire to receive a free workable solution that does not require me to give my credit card information.

I wouldn't believe that paying would fix this issue. Printing is just the same, free or paid.

I would have thought the same thing! I'm only going off of what the 6 Adobe representatives told me. Somehow the bug is not in the PRO version.

It's hard not to read too much into this, but it seems like a REALLY convenient way to force people to purchase the upgrade! 😉

I also doubt there will be any difference, but you can test it out for yourself, for free.

Get the free trial version of Acrobat and use it for the 7-day period it works without paying to test it out. Just be sure to cancel the subscription you agree to before that period ends or it will automatically switch over to a paid subscription...
