Current version of PDF Reader & Pro for Mac cannot open a link to a word document

Has anyone else experienced this problem. We have standard PDF documents with links to open Word documents. This has worked for many years but when a user upgraded to the current version of Acrobat Pro the links stopped working. Link - Menu action Open File (local file). Inspecting the link shows : file:///Users/csa09/Desktop/Diskbuild/CTW3.doc The only workaround I have found was uninstall Pro and Reader then install reader AdbeRdr1011_EN_US.dmg. All links worked first time on the old version, NO it is not affected by the Preferences/Trusts settings. Fresh install of current Acrobat reader reintroduced the problem with no settings changes. I suspect the problem is the link's "file.///" trying to open the work document in a browser? (Suggestion from a mac expert).
