Don't find LIST itrem in the Order panel view of the Accessible Tool

Hi,

Context: I'd like very much to set a new position order for the screen reader (a new number) to an element of a PDF. It is a group of images with text that I scanned and recognised as text with OCR.

But the group of images are structured as a list, one afer another in an horizontal manner.

The real question is: if I want to position the elemtns for the correct reading order, I DON'T FIND THE ELEMENT LIST inside the Order View.

So, how should I identify this element in the order, as a Paragraf or a Text?

As a Figure?

As a Table?

Thanks a lot for guidance,

Oliver

Hi @oliver_1619,

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, it is possible to define the reading order of content as a <List> tag in Adobe Acrobat, but it cannot be done directly through the Reading Order tool (the one accessed by pressing "Z" or via Accessibility > Reading Order). That tool simplifies tagging and only allows basic structure elements like Paragraph, Heading, Table, etc., but not specific semantic tags like List, List Item, or Label.

You’ll need to use the Tags panel instead of the Reading Order tool.

Here’s how you can do it:

  • Open the Tags Panel
Go to View > Show/Hide > Navigation Panes > Tags.

  • Find or Create a <<List> Tag

    • Right-click in the Tags tree and choose New Tag.

    • Set Type = List, and click OK.

    • You can rename it if you want, e.g., “My Custom List.”

  • Add <LI>, <Lbl>, and <LBody> Structure

    • Right-click on the new <List> tag and choose New Tag for each:

      • Type: LI (List Item)

      • Inside LI, add:

        • Type: Lbl (Label – e.g., bullet or number)

        • Type: LBody (Body – actual item content)

  • Map Page Content to These Tags

    • Expand the tag, right-click <Lbl> or <LBody>, then choose Create Tag from Selection or Properties > Edit Object, and drag content from the Content panel to these tags.

Let us know if this helps.

Hi @oliver_1619,

Hope you are doing well. Thanks for writing in about working with the Reader Order.

What I would suggest is checking the Reading Order List instead of the tool window.

You can get there from the right-hand tool panel.

To get it, right-click the right-hand panel and ensure that you see a checkmark on the Reading Order > It should appear as the letter "Z" with dots on the connecting lines.

Click on it, and you should see the element list. You can arrange the order for the document at your convenience.

More info here: https://adobe.ly/3ZPpMvt.

You can specifically scroll down to the section "Change the reading order by dragging on the page."

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Souvik.

Hi Souvik,

I already knew how to activate the reading order tool and the "z". But thanks anyway!

But my question was another: I would appreciate very much if you could answer the question about how to define the order as a "LIST" element tag. Is it possible?

Thanks,

Oliver
