Adobe Acrobat Reader – Bug Report
Subject: Access Denied when opening PDF files directly from Google Drive for Desktop
Environment
* Application: Adobe Acrobat Reader (latest version)
* Operating System: Windows 11
* Storage: Google Drive for Desktop
* Google Drive Mode: Streaming (files marked as Available Offline)
* Antivirus: Kaspersky Endpoint Security Cloud
* Adobe: Updated to the latest available version
⸻
Problem Description
Adobe Acrobat Reader is unable to open some PDF files stored in Google Drive for Desktop.
The following error is displayed:
“There was an error opening this document. Access denied.”
In some attempts Acrobat also displays:
“The file path is too long. Specify a shorter file name or save to a location with a shorter path.”
⸻
Steps to Reproduce
1. Install Google Drive for Desktop.
2. Configure Google Drive in Streaming Mode.
3. Mark the folder as Available Offline.
4. Open a PDF stored inside Google Drive using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
⸻
Expected Result
The PDF should open normally.
⸻
Actual Result
Some PDF files fail with:
Access Denied
Other PDFs in the same folder open correctly.
⸻
Tests Performed
Acrobat
* Reinstalled Acrobat Reader.
* Updated to the latest version.
* Disabled Protected Mode.
* Added the Google Drive folder as a trusted location.
* Reset Acrobat preferences.
Result: No change.
⸻
Google Drive
* Reinstalled Google Drive for Desktop.
* Enabled Offline Availability.
* Confirmed files are synchronized.
* Verified the issue occurs only inside Google Drive.
⸻
Windows
The exact same PDF:
* Opens correctly in Google Chrome.
* Opens correctly after being copied to Desktop.
* Opens correctly outside Google Drive.
⸻
Kaspersky
* Application Control is disabled.
* No indication that Kaspersky blocks Acrobat.
⸻
Additional Observations
* The issue affects only certain PDF files.
* Other PDFs stored in the same folder open correctly.
* Renaming one affected file temporarily resolved the issue.
* This suggests the problem may be related to the way Acrobat resolves long or virtual paths created by Google Drive for Desktop.
Example internal path:
G:\.shortcut-targets-by-id\...
Why this appears to be an Acrobat issue
The same PDF:
* Opens in Chrome.
* Opens after copying to a local folder.
* Fails only when opened directly by Acrobat from Google Drive.
This indicates that the PDF itself is valid and accessible.

Similar Reports
The behavior is similar to known issues involving:
* Google Drive for Desktop
* Virtual drives
* Long path handling
* Desktop Connector
* “Access Denied”
* “Path too long”
⸻
Request
Please investigate compatibility between Adobe Acrobat Reader and Google Drive for Desktop when opening PDF files from virtual synchronized locations.
